Farmers’ Markets & Artisans’ Markets: Greater Victoria’s Wonderful Public Markets

Throughout the summer months in Greater Victoria, outdoor farmers’ and artisans’ markets offer some of the best free entertainment in the city. The more established annual markets start up in April/May, and some carry on well into October and even November. Some put up their tents every week, while others are regular monthly events.

Each market has its own personality, depending on the participating vendors. Some, like the Victoria Downtown Public Market, emphasize tree-ripened fruit and vegetables direct from growers, fresh herbs and flowers. Others, like the Bastion Square Public Market each Thursday, Friday and Saturday, focus much more on local and B.C.-made crafts, artwork, clothing, and jewellery.

My favourite markets are those that mix it up with vendors hawking everything from produce to pottery, baked goods to handmade soaps. Enticing aromas of curry and spicy souvlaki emanate from the reasonably priced take-out food stands, and some live music completes the perfect ambience. If that sounds good to you, you can’t go wrong with the Moss Street or James Bay markets on Saturday, or the Thursday evening market in Sidney.

Go in the morning for best selection, or stop in over the lunch hour to enjoy some of the Island’s freshest, tastiest local fare.

Just saw today at Hillside centre that Oaklands has a community market on the first Thursday of every month as well. Here’s the linkage!

Fabulous scouting, Becks! Thanks so much for letting me know. I’ll add this one to the roundup of 2011 markets. Many thanks.

Another ‘market’ sorta, although it probably belongs more in the “food” section. This Saturday (May 7th), the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada will be hosting along with M&M Meats a BBQ. The absolutely crazy thing about this one, is that for a burger, a pop and a bag of chips, it’s a recommended donation of $2.50! Definitely a scrimp for sure, but donating to a fantastic cause. I’ll be facilitating the Royal Oak shop along with owners Angela and Shawn Cote. Again, Linkage: http://www.charitybbqday.com/home.asp

    All the best,
